As competition season approaches, students may find themselves struggling to manage their busy schedules. Between exams, competitions, schoolwork, and various other responsibilities, it can be challenging to prioritize self-care. Neglecting nutrition, organization, and downtime for fun can have serious consequences for dancers' mental and physical health. It is crucial for dancers to take time for themselves every week to focus on keeping their mind and body healthy and happy. This can include spending time with friends, going to the movies, or engaging in mindfulness activities to alleviate anxiety.

Unfortunately, many dancers neglect this aspect of their lives, and I was no exception. During my full-time years of dancing, I suffered from an eating disorder that led to burnout and depression, ultimately causing me to give up dancing entirely just as I was becoming a professional dancer. However, I eventually learned the importance of balance and downtime away from the studio. I began prioritizing myself and my needs to perform at my best in all aspects of my life and work.

To achieve this balance, try setting aside time each Sunday to plan for the week ahead. Spend just 20 minutes setting goals for the week and scheduling downtime for yourself. If you are a full-time dancer, consider creating a meal plan to ensure you are consuming the proper nutrition to fuel your body. Additionally, take the time to reflect on the previous week and consider what did and did not work for you. If you stayed up too late watching movies and found yourself exhausted the next day, make an effort to prioritize getting enough sleep. If you felt lonely or bored, plan to spend time with friends or engage in a fun activity, such as going to the beach.

It is essential to remember that dance is just one aspect of your life. While it may be a significant passion, allowing it to consume your entire being can be detrimental to your mental and physical health. Make it a priority to schedule downtime and focus on yourself every week. As one wise student put it, "the day I lose my personality is the day I stop dancing." Therefore, it is essential to prioritize yourself and your needs to ensure a long and healthy dance career.
